Elmstone Church
The small village of Elmstone dates back to the Domesday Book, but the church was probably built a little later, most likely in the mid-late 12th Century. The church is a small building, consisting of a nave and chancel, with a very small north aisle. It has an embattled square tower in the north-west corner. The vestry area is in the base of the tower and contains the ropes for the 3 bells, which were cast in 1712 at Whitechapel.
The Church has a number of fine features, including unusual monuments for its size and a fine screen to the chancel. The North Aisle contains a perfect piscina under its East Window, which has very unusual tracery. The font is Norman and made of Bethersden marble.
The organ is 19th Century and was built by John Eagles. It was formerly in the chapel of Hatfield House, where it was reputed to have been played by Queen Victoria. Elmstone is unusual in having no dedication to a Saint.
We have a regular service pattern which you can find here, and community events which you can find here.
